Project Description
In 2022, we were commissioned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to oversee the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Shrewsbury House Community Centre on Shooters Hill. Blakeney Leigh provided specifications, supported listed building consent applications (granted in January 2023), and managed the tender process (completed in April 2023). Works began on July 17, 2023, and were completed on budget and schedule by September 27, 2024.
Key aspects included refurbishing a gazebo, leading to its removal from the Historic England heritage at-risk register, and extensive external renovations of the main building, such as roof renewal, joinery and gutter repairs, and external redecoration. Internal upgrades involved fire safety improvements, LED lighting installation, and enhanced thermal performance through roof insulation.
A major challenge was ensuring the Centre remained operational, including uninterrupted Maritime Radio broadcasts, despite logistical complexities like mast relocation during scaffolding works.
